Frank Styles painted the City of Adelaide as a wall mural on the side of the Port of Sunderland shortly before the Tall Ships arrived in 2018. This print is taken from that mural and you can make out the texture of the port wall on the sales of this print!
The City of Adelaide is a clipper ship, built by William Hay and Company in Sunderland, and launched on 7 May 1864. The ship was commissioned in the Royal Navy as HMS Carrick between 1923 and 1948 and, after decommissioning, was known as Carrick until 2001. Built to transport goods and passengers between England and Australia, the ship is the subject of controversy when it was sent to Australia after lying in state of disrepair in Scotland.
Frank Styles supports returning this ship to its home city of Sunderland.
